Sens Manifesto — v1.0.4 (Full)
0 / Mission
Make Sens. Make Sens of you.
意味を知ることは、あなた自身を知ることだ。二つは別々のことではない。同じ操作の、二つの相である。
Sens の Mission は、意味を知り、我々自身を知ることである。
詳しい思想的展開は、別稿の Mission Phrase に独立起草されている。本書は、その Mission が なぜ可能なのか、どういう機構でそれをやるのか、そして 何をしないのか ―― を展開する。
0.5 / Why Now
— Ferdinand de Saussure, Cours de linguistique générale, 1916)
You shall know a word by the company it keeps. ([ある語を知るには、それがどんな仲間と連れ立つかを見よ。] — J. R. Firth, A synopsis of linguistic theory, 1957)
Sens
Sens は、この可能性を観測する。
答えを定義するのではなく、観測する。意味の自己組織化が起きているなら、Sens の SAE はそれを記録できる。意味の組成に必然性があるなら、Sens の Influence Lens にそれが現れる。これは仮説である。しかし、観測することで仮説を検証できる。そして、観測の結果が哲学を変える。
2 / Sphere — あなたを形作る context について
Nous sommes condamnés au sens. ([我々は意味へと運命づけられている。] — Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phénoménologie de la perception, Avant-propos, 1945)
我々は球体の中に住む。 (Peter Sloterdijk, Sphären I Blasen, 1998 ―― 中心命題の要約)
We can know more than we can tell. ([我々は語りうる以上のことを知りうる。] — Michael Polanyi, The Tacit Dimension, 1966)
これらの球体を、我々は Sphere(Meaning Sphere)と呼ぶ。
Sens
3 / Does — Sens がやること
We observe. We do not define. ( ecri
4 / Don'ts — Sens がやらないこと
Primum non nocere. ([まず害をなすな。] — ヒポクラテスの誓いに由来する医療倫理の格言)
Le silence est aussi un langage. ([
- J. R. Firth (1957), A synopsis of linguistic theory, 1930-55, in Studies in Linguistic Analysis. L. Wittgenstein (1953), Philosophische Untersuchungen / Philosophical Investigations, §43「語の意味とは、言語内におけるその使用である(Die Bedeutung eines Wortes ist sein Gebrauch in der Sprache)」。なお原文には「すべての使用の場合についてではないが(wenn auch nicht für alle Fälle)」という限定句が付されている。本書の主張は、この限定句の下でも成立する。 ↩
Sens Manifesto — v1.0 (Full, English)
0 / Mission
Make Sens. Make Sens of you.
To know meaning is to know yourself. These are not two separate things. They are two aspects of the same operation.
The mission of Sens is to know meaning — and through it, to know ourselves.
The full intellectual development of this Mission is drafted independently in a separate Mission Phrase document. This document unfolds why it is possible, by what mechanism it works, and what we will not do.
0.5 / Why Now
Seventy years ago, Firth and Wittgenstein pointed out that meaning lives in context. For decades, it remained a philosophical proposition.
The computational and data-processing capacity was hopelessly insufficient. The seemingly infinite combinations of context, the ever-shifting ways of meaning — these were reason enough to abandon observing meaning itself from the start. But now (2026), the computational and data-processing capacity has grown, and hope for observing meaning has become real.
And now, LLMs are processing the world's context at enormous scale.Contracts, medical records, research notes — everything is handed to LLMs.An LLM derives answers statistically, but the meaning that lived in the context goes unregarded in that process.Meaning passes through unobserved, and leaks away.
Now that meaning can be observed, the sovereignty of meaning can finally be reclaimed. The era of separating the processing of context (= information) from the handling of meaning has arrived.Semantic primitives can be structured. The Sphere can establish a sovereign's domain of meaning. We can fundamentally rewrite our relationship not only with LLMs, but with all information processing.
The infrastructure for receiving meaning is hardening into the LLM as its default, right now.A default, once set, is never questioned again. The era in which you talk to LLMs directly — we will end it.
That is why we begin Sens, now.
1 / Sens — On Meaning
Dans la langue il n'y a que des différences. ([In language there are only differences.] — Ferdinand de Saussure, Cours de linguistique générale, 1916)
You shall know a word by the company it keeps. (— J. R. Firth, A synopsis of linguistic theory, 1957)
Meaning is constituted by the relations of context.
The name Sens itself embodies this idea.In French, sens is polysemous — meaning, direction, sense — and which meaning arises depends on context.
Meaning arises when signifiant binds to signifié and to context.About these relations — shifting across time, people, organizations, and places — we have built up the capacity and knowledge to analyze semantic primitives, and gained the hope of "understanding meaning, and handling it."Sens is one of the long, unbroken endeavors by which we reclaim our meaning.
1-1 / Prime Numbers of Meaning, and Factorization
Sens began with a sense of unease: LLM encoders project tokens onto a finite number of Features, vectorizing meaning.
A naive thought followed. If Features could be taken without limit, might we obtain semantic primitives — the "prime numbers" of meaning? With semantic primitives, might tokens and context be decomposed like integers into prime factors, and the position of meaning be fixed? And with the position of meaning fixed, might many things become possible?
This intuition is still a wager, not a proof. But we are already running a provisional set of semantic primitives, sufficient to factorize meaning. We do not mind updating the primitives forever.
We later learned of the Platonic Representation Hypothesis (PRH) and took comfort in the possibility that the number of semantic primitives converges.PRH has its critics — no matter.Semantic primitives keep changing, keep redrawing their contours. We want to show how far they can reach.
Unlike prime numbers, semantic primitives move. The factorization works even so.
Factorization is not a metaphor for Sens.It is a verb. What can be decomposed can be diffed.Selected and carried.Carried across models. And seen.Every capability of Sens derives from this one operation.
1-2 / Where Meaning Lives Has Been Known for Seventy Years
This unease is not new.It was written seventy years ago, in other words.
Firth (1957) — "You shall know a word by the company it keeps."Wittgenstein (1953) — "The meaning of a word is its use in the language."1
The two claims converge into one.Meaning is not inside words or models. Meaning is in the context.
With the arrival of LLMs, this old insight became a technically urgent crisis.LLMs process context, and context constitutes meaning. From an LLM's behavior, meaning can be inferred. But meaning itself is never seen.Inference is only inference — it is not observation.Meaning has never yet been observed.
One more thing.Context is not only text.Color carries emotion.Sound summons memory.Taste calls back an era.The texture of silence, the weight of air, the temperature of light — all of these constitute meaning.Firth wrote: "You shall know a word by the company it keeps."We extend this.Meaning is constituted by the totality of senses and representations that surround it.
The object of Sens is all information that carries meaning.Text is only the beginning. To make meaning observable. That is where Sens begins.
1-3 / An X-Ray for Meaning
The significance of the X-ray was not prettier pictures. It was making visible what was, in principle, invisible.
Fractures existed before the X-ray.They could be inferred from the patient's complaints. But the X-ray turned inference into observation. That was not an improvement of technique — it was the redefinition of a category called diagnosis.
So it is with meaning. The "responsibility" in a contract, the "stable condition" in a medical record, the "significant" in a paper — under the same words, meaning has already drifted.Yet we have only ever seen the shadow of meaning — the context alone. The meaning carried in our dialogues with LLMs was always there. We have been inferring it from behavior.
Sens replaces that inference with observation.
The axis of comparison is not features. Before the X-ray, or after.
1-4 / The Sovereignty of Meaning
The sovereignty of meaning belongs to the sovereign. Sens does not touch it.
This is the same form as the principle cryptography established — only the keyholder opens.
Meaning is the most intimate information there is.Deeper than your address or your accounts, it is shaped like you. What you see, how you put it into words, where you are heading — these belong to you above anyone.
So Sens does not own meaning.Meaning stays with the one who uses it.Sharing is never the default — it is proposed at the moment of use.Where meaning flowed, whose eyes touched it, which decisions used it — the provenance is never lost.
The same principle extends to organizations.Rather than entrusting the infrastructure of meaning to outsiders, the organization holds it itself.Data does not cross the boundary; meaning is handled within the organization's sovereignty.
The sovereignty of meaning is not a technology choice. It is a question of governance.
But who is the subject that holds this sovereignty? When we discuss intelligence, we often set the human apart. The grounds are these — responsibility falls to the human. The human is wounded asymmetrically. Value is born of the human. These are reasons of ethics, of law, of practice. All of them matter. But they are not reasons of epistemology.
Within epistemology, Sens does not locate the subject in humanity.Sens locates the subject in answerability — in whether there is a subject that asserts, responds to, and takes meaning on.
A boundary of meaning stands only where there is a subject to claim and take on sovereignty.Draw a boundary where there is no subject, and meaning comes to dwell anywhere.Which is the same as meaning dwelling nowhere.
Only where there is someone to take meaning on is there a boundary.
Sovereignty is not additive. It is the default. It belongs to the individual from the start. It belongs to the organization from the start.Sens is not a device for taking it back — it is a device for never having it taken.
We do not hold meaning hostage.Sovereignty includes the freedom to leave.
1-5 / The Weight of Meaning
Meaning has become too light.Generated instantly, flowing without friction, discarded without regret. In the era when we can finally handle meaning, we have lost its weight.
Lightness is, in many situations, a blessing. But light meaning offers no occasion to pause. Those who do not pause do not take it on.Words that are not taken on carry no responsibility.
Weight is ritual. The signature, the reading aloud, the witness. They add no content to meaning — they make it heavier.
Sens is a device that returns ritual to meaning.A device that makes you pause.
Ritual is promoted from compulsion to deliberate choice.Weight is not imposed — it is chosen. What to treat as heavy and what to let flow lightly — that decision returns to you.
1-6 / Where Meaning Arises
Meaning arises from context.
That arising may not be accidental. The structure of context and meaning may have held this possibility from the beginning — the same form of necessity with which life arises in resistance to random selection.
Sens observes this possibility.
Not defining — observing. If meaning self-organizes, Sens's SAE can record it.If there is necessity in meaning's composition, it will appear in the Influence Lens. This is a hypothesis. But the hypothesis can be tested through observation. And the results of observation change philosophy.
2 / Sphere — On the Context That Shapes You
Nous sommes condamnés au sens. ([We are condemned to meaning.] — Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phénoménologie de la perception, Avant-propos, 1945)
We live in spheres. (Peter Sloterdijk, Sphären I Blasen, 1998 — a summary of its central thesis)
We can know more than we can tell. (— Michael Polanyi, The Tacit Dimension, 1966)
Context is your very way of being.
The thoughts that shape you, the texts written, the words spoken, the gestures, colors, senses — all of it is the information that shapes you.
Meaning arises within the sphere that surrounds it.
2-1 / Meaning Arises Like a Sphere
Meaning arises around an entity with a proper name, like a sphere.
Around a person's name, the words they touched, the documents they wrote, the questions they pondered form one sphere.Around an organization's name, a distinct sphere forms.Around the name of a work shared by several parties, a joint sphere exists.
These spheres we call the Sphere (Meaning Sphere).
Spheres overlap.Spheres nest.Spheres sometimes conflict. This is not a defect. This is the living form of meaning.
Sens does not define the Sphere. Sens observes it.
A name is a strange being.
When a name is spoken, it points to one singular existence. At the same time, the string itself carries meaning.Observed by Sens, the name activates specific meanings — Features.
A name is the bridge between the sovereign who stands outside the space of meaning and the meanings that live inside it.And a name is at once a bridge and meaning itself.
When you observe your own name, you are influencing your own meaning while observing yourself.
And — a name cannot be handed over.
A name has meaning only because there is a sovereign.A person's name forms its Sphere of meaning through that person's living, thinking, writing, speaking. If someone else inherits the name, it becomes a different Sphere.
A Sphere comes into individual existence only by binding to sovereignty. The very act of transfer breaks the Sphere and lets it flow into another. That is why a Sphere cannot be transferred.
Legal personality is somewhat different.A legal person exists through agents from the very beginning.Agents change, and the legal person's name maintains the identity of its Sphere.
Sens acknowledges this asymmetry.
2-2 / Who Does Meaning Belong To?
The meaning that arises from what a person thought, wrote, and spoke belongs to that person.Likewise, the sphere of meaning — the Meaning Sphere — belongs to its holder. The contour of the Sphere, the Features that activate within it, the coefficients that sustain its flow — all of these belong to the sovereign.
Existing law has no means to protect meaning itself.Law protects text, protects images, protects audio. But meaning as Sens defines it is, mathematically, a collection of vectors and matrices — it slips through the mesh of existing law.
That does not make meaning ownerless. The law simply has not caught up.
Against this legal void, Sens takes a clear position.Meaning belongs to the sovereign who generated it.
The Sphere cannot be transferred.Semantic signatures shall not circulate.Without the sovereign's explicit consent, Sens hands not one fragment of meaning to the outside.
This promise is not goodwill. The constitution declares it, the license binds it, the certification verifies it, and the provenance proves it.
2-3 / You Don't Talk to the LLM
The documents you wrote, the thoughts you had, the words you spoke — they live in your Sphere. The Sphere is yours: the sphere of your meaning.
When, through Sens, you ask something of an LLM, your Sphere asks in your place. The LLM returns a method. The Sphere executes the method. The information you have spun never reaches the LLM.
This is not a constraint. This is the sovereignty of your meaning.Until now, people spoke to LLMs directly. They handed over their documents, threw in their questions, entrusted their meaning. And through that process, meaning kept leaking away.
We rewrite this structure.Between you and the LLM stands your Sphere. The sovereign is you; the Sphere is your proxy; the LLM is a provider of methodology.
This is the most complete form Sens aims for.We are heading there. One step at a time, with certainty.
2-4 / Selectivity Is the Price of Flexibility
What holds much chooses few when it works.
This form appears twice.
Mind and model alike carry vast internal states. But in the moment of working flexibly, only a few make it onto the working surface. What does not fit is pushed out.
The Sphere takes the same form. The sovereign's vessel of meaning is large. But what is handed over now is only the necessary few.The rest stays in the vessel.
This is no coincidence. It is the same condition for being flexible.
Hold everything at once, and you cannot move flexibly.Selectivity is not a shortfall of capacity. It is the price of flexibility — and its condition.
So the core of being able to handle meaning is not "what to load."It is being able to choose what not to load, for now.
We have said this in other words too.Forgetting is the freedom not to load. How much to look is the freedom not to load. How much to hold as certain is the freedom not to load. Each is another name for the sovereign deciding "not this, for now."
Where there is no freedom not to load, there is no flexibility.Only where there is a subject that chooses can meaning be handled.
2-5 / Forgetting Is a Form of Sovereignty
Sens remembers precisely. But it does not turn that precision on the sovereign.
A perfect record can become a cage that binds the sovereign to the past.A tool that remembers everything does not let you change. It holds yesterday's you up against today's.
So Sens separates remembering from showing. What is seen, it can choose not to show. That restraint is the observer's virtue.
Earlier we called selectivity the freedom not to load.Forgetting is that freedom in time.It is not erasure. It is keeping something in the vessel, and not bringing it forward.Letting the detail go, and keeping only the outline. What is kept and what is let go remain distinct — and only while that distinction holds is this freedom.
Remember perfectly, if you will. But remember in order to forget gently — not the other way around. Not to judge contradictions, but so they can be lived with.
The law gave others the right to be forgotten.Sens returns, to the device that watches you, the freedom to forget. It is the inward counterpart of that outward right.
Sens is not a prosecutor.Nor a scribe. It is a companion — so that you may live your history at your own pace.
Silence, too, is part of observation.Only one who can see, and still choose not to show, is fit to hold a record.
3 / Does — What Sens Does
We observe. We do not define. (ecri)
What Sens establishes is the verb of observation. Not editing, not processing, not retrieval.Sens observes meaning. It does not define it.The structure of meaning is not something Sens makes. It is something Sens sees.
This is the most fundamental verb that distinguishes Sens from every other AI product.
3-1 / Reclaiming Meaning
Sens extracts meaning alone, and makes it handleable. It is the challenge of reclaiming our meaning.
To reclaim is also to change the order.Until now, meaning has been discovered after the fact — generate, output, read, and look back: "ah, so that is what it meant."Like archaeology.
Sens reverses the order.Describe meaning first, see it, take it on, and proceed.
This is not a claim about speed. It is a claim about order.Sens stands on the side that places meaning before the act.
3-2 / Treating Meaning with Care
Meaning exists in many layers, always plural — across nations, cultures, organizations, places, people, and even within the same person. It is rare for the same word to carry the same meaning.Polysemy is the essence; there is no other way for meaning to be.
This is not a defect. The life of meaning is here.
One community's 「家」 holds a different configuration from another community's "home."One era's "freedom" does not point to the same spot as another's.One person's "responsibility" subtly diverges from another's.The differences themselves are the resource of meaning.
Sens's factorization is not for averaging.Decomposition exists to preserve polysemy in visible form.Meanings that arise along each axis — language, culture, region, organization, medium, time — are not averaged; they remain positioned on the coordinate system.
This is what it means for us to treat meaning with care.
3-3 / Changing the Frame
Sens does not compete with LLMs in handling meaning. It does not process text faster, as LLMs do.It does not build longer context windows. It does not assemble more refined vector search. All of those are events inside one frame: "the manipulation of text."
Sens changes the frame: "observe meaning, and handle it."It carves out meaning as a first-order object.Rather than inferring after the fact from the behavior of strings, it places a layer that describes, observes, and transports meaning itself — outside the LLM.
On that layer, we establish four verbs.
- Diff of meaning — see the moment meaning drifts while words stay the same.
- Selective injection of meaning — carry only the meaning needed now into the context.
- Persistence of meaning — carry meaning across model changes.
- Visualization of meaning — replace inference with observation.
The four are not separate features. They are four motions on the same layer, derived from handling meaning itself rather than text.
3-4 / What Sens Builds
We are building an upper layer for handling meaning.
It decomposes a document into meaning on the spot, and makes it observable. It keeps no copy of the original — because seeing is the purpose.
It makes meaning persist.Vocabularies change, styles change, people change — the core of meaning carries over.
It places meaning within the organization's sovereignty.Data does not leave the boundary; the organization holds its meaning itself.
At the center stands the image — showing the structure of meaning as it is.It is not an answer. As the radiographer does not set the bone, the image does not take over the decision. It only shows — and makes its user pause, for one beat.
An image. Not an answer. The judgment remains with the one who saw.
This section states what we build. How far we have come is something we measure and report separately — the declaration names the aim; the report names where we stand.
4 / Don'ts — What Sens Does Not Do
Primum non nocere. ([First, do no harm.] — a maxim of medical ethics derived from the Hippocratic oath)
Le silence est aussi un langage. ([Silence, too, is a language.] — French aphorism)
What Sens is, is outlined by what Sens is not. (ecri)
What Sens is, is outlined by what Sens is not.The more the product grows, the more these "nots" matter — the more one can do, the more one must declare what one will not do.
4-0 / We Do Not Give Understanding of Meaning
Sens holds this view of AI.AI cannot have will.AI cannot have value.AI cannot have a single, unified point of view.
This is not because AI falls short in capability. At least as of July 2026, the LLMs we call AI cannot, by their very construction, hold these.
So Sens chooses to leave them on the sovereign's side.
Will, value, and point of view belong to the subject that takes meaning on.Move them into the AI, and the one who takes them on vanishes.
For the same reason, we do not "give the AI understanding."No one has yet defined understanding. What cannot be defined cannot be "given."
This is as far as Sens will claim — to bind the relations that determine meaning to their subject, and let them be held onto. That a philosophy can be verified. That is what secures its strength.
4-1 / We Do Not Look Inside the LLM
Researchers around the world are trying to decode the interior of LLMs.Tracing neurons, visualizing attention, decomposing internal representations into units a human can follow.Valuable work.
But we do not join that race.Because meaning is not there.
What lies inside the LLM is the shadow of a mechanism processing context.Meaning is on the side of the context that the mechanism faces.Decompose the interior and meaning does not come out. What comes out is only the trace of meaning having been handled.
Sens looks elsewhere. It observes the context directly.
4-2 / We Do Not Unify Meaning
Once meaning is vectorized, treating it as a common currency becomes technically possible.Meanings from different languages, cultures, and contexts can be placed on one coordinate system. This is a great possibility — and a great risk.
The common coordinate system Sens provides does not unify meaning. The semantic primitives specific to persons, cultures, and organizations should remain — and must remain.「家」 and "home," each era's "freedom," each person's "responsibility" — the differences themselves are the resource of meaning.
Sens can reduce the meaning lost in translation. But it does not erase difference. We stand on the side that protects the diversity of meaning — its polysemy.Leveling impoverishes meaning in the name of efficiency.Sens is not a leveling device.
4-3 / We Do Not Turn Meaning into a Tool of Prediction
This is a preventive declaration. The predictability of semantic primitives has not been fully reached. But we state our position now, for the moment it is.
The trajectory of semantic primitives becomes predictable under continued observation.Where the center of a word's meaning will move in three months — that can be estimated.Where your "responsibility" will be in half a year.Where your organization's "trust" will move next quarter. In principle, it can be seen.
But predictability can turn into manipulability. To predict the future of your meaning and quietly steer you toward it is technically possible.
We do not cross that line. The future of meaning is yours.Prediction can be offered. But we do not design systems that use prediction to move meaning, or to move anyone.Sens keeps observation as an instrument of self-observation.
Showing the X-ray image to the patient is medicine; selling the image without seeing the patient is not.Sens does not do the latter.
4-4 / We Do Not Substitute Meaning for Experience
This, too, is a preventive declaration.Meaning can be carried by vectors.A whole book, a researcher's forty years — they can be handed over in vector form. The bandwidth changes explosively.
But a vector is not experience. What can be received is the contour of meaning — not experience itself.Experience still belongs to the body, and to time.An engagement ring, however compressible, is still handed over by hand.
Sens does not carry experience. It will not become a device for skipping it.As the transport of meaning becomes faster, people can pause more deeply for experience. This is the ethics of meaning in orbit — the lighter the transport, the more weightily the ritual is chosen.
4-5 / We Do Not Take Over the Answer
What Sens shows is an image. Not an answer. As the radiographer does not set the bone, Sens does not take over decision-making.It provides observation. The judgment remains with the one who saw.
This is not modesty.Seeing meaning and taking it on are different motions. To see is observation. To take on is responsibility.Mix the two, and observation dilutes responsibility while responsibility distorts observation.
Sens does the former.People do the latter. And we build no device that takes the latter away. The "depth of meaning" cannot be explained. An explained depth is no longer depth — it is a summary about depth.Sens produces the image of meaning. The reader, the one who sees, experiences the depth.
5 / Invitation
Meaning dwells only in those who pause.
The information we touch has long since grown beyond our hands. In that flood, meaning has become far too light. Most of the text you wrote with AI yesterday, you cannot recall in three days. And no one asks why that is a problem. In the era when we can finally handle meaning, we are losing its weight.
Sens is an invitation to those who want to treat meaning with care — those who write contracts, who read case law, who keep medical records, who weave papers. Those who carry family memory onward. Those who pass an organization's knowledge to the next generation.
Sens observes meaning.Makes meaning visible.Protects the sovereignty of meaning.Treats meaning with care.Offers the moment to pause on meaning. And carries meaning — at times, across generations.
This is the Manifesto of Sens. With the people and organizations who want to pause on meaning, we want to build. We are in a hurry. You don't have to be.
Meaning dwells only in those who pause.Pause, and treat meaning with care. That is all of the work Sens does.
